I was in Cologne, Germany this week speaking at two conferences and I walked by this immense church (it used to be the largest in the world).
Here is a quick photo I snapped with my iPhone.
All I could think while I shot the picture was, "What's insane is people worked to build this church in Germany for over 245 years. I feel like no one is that patient anymore. When I tell people, on average, it takes 12-20 years to become successful at a business, people look at me like I'm some kind of lunatic."
So now I've decided to start telling people, "Oh, 12-20 years is too long for you? Go buy a plane ticket to Cologne, Germany and see how much patience a true masterpiece takes."
Your life can be a masterpiece if you build it non-stop, slow and steady.
Like Warren Buffett says the secret to good business partnerships and good marriages is LOW EXPECTATIONS.
Ha, he means that tongue-in-cheek. Kind of...
Set realistic time frames for your life.
Allan Nation used to tell me, "Tai, a successful business is like having a baby. For the first few years it keeps you up stressed all night. But eventually, if you take care of it through the hard times, it will turn into a 'grown-up' business that will take care of you."
The billionaire Jack Simplot agreed, "Grab hold of something and hang on!"
Find the correct industry/career and never give up.
And don't let the media trick you. They want to sell you their books, magazines, and programs about quick fortunes. Lies sometimes sell better than hard truths.
That's for suckers. Never be the sucker.
Remember John Wooden, "Be quick, but not in a hurry."
Or what Joel Salatin used to tell me, "Tai, make haste slowly."
Here is my one question for you: What is something you have been too impatient with and how can you slow down more and let it happen?
