World’s Best Love Poem

Maybe the best love poem ever written???

“Fire runs through my body with the pain of loving you

Pain runs through my body with the fires of my love for you

Sickness wanders my body with my love for you

Pain like a boil about to burst with my love for you

Consumed by the fire with my love for you

I remember what you said to me

I am thinking of your love for me

I am torn by your love for me

Pain and more pain

Where are you going with my love?

I am told you will go from here

I am told you will leave me here

My body is numb with grief

Remember what i have said, my love

Good bye, my love, good bye.”

This poem, recited by an anonymous Kwakuitl Indian of Southern Alaska to a missionary in 1896…

Did The Indians Have It Right?

A friend emailed this to me – made me laugh and think at the same time:

WHERE DID THE WHITE MAN GO WRONG? TOUGH TO ARGUE WITH THIS ONE …

Indian Chief “Two Eagles” was asked by a white U.S. Government official, “You have observed the white man for 90 years. You’ve seen his wars and his technological advances. You’ve seen his progress, and the damage he’s done.”

The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, “Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?”

The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied: “When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.”

Then the chief leaned back and smiled “Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.”

Everything You Need To Know About Business By Peter Drucker

Not sure there is much I would need to add here. Except to say that one of my main mentors, Allan Nation basically considered Peter a ‘god’.

I am a huge believer in distilling complex ideas into simple concepts. I think Peter does that here.

Peter Drucker writes:

A company’s primary responsibility is to serve its customers, to provide the goods or services which the company exists to produce. Profit is not the primary goal but rather an essential condition for the company’s continued existence. Other responsibilities, e.g., to employees and society, exist to support the company’s continued ability to carry out its primary purpose.

He further elaborates:

Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two–€”and only two–€”basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs. Marketing is the distinguishing, unique function of the business.

Something That Matters – Is that all you need?

Right Brain Left Brain

Blake Mycoskie did a guest blog  at “Want to be Successful? Start Something That Matters’”  and basically said that all you need to start a successful company is to start something that matters.

I think that’s a bit of a generalization (I wish there was just one ingredient formula to success).

This reminds me of a saying I once heard “Give the world something she wants, and she will give you bread”

Michael Murphy, a mega VC, once was listening to me talk about how I admired someone who was so smart and had written so many books and he interrupted me and said ‘Yes, but is he worth a damn.’

I think you have to be ‘worth a damn’ to the world for her to reward you with true wealth.

One point that I absolutely agree with Blake on is:

“When you have a memorable story about who you are and what you’re doing, your success depends less on how experienced you are or how many degrees you have or who you know. A good story transcends boundaries, breaks barriers, and opens doors. It is a key not only to starting a business but also to clarifying your own personal identity and choices.”

I think having a story to tell is probably the MOST important thing you can do to launch a business, idea, or concept.

Scientists know that the human mind craves simplicity and a story is more simple than a logical explanation of a concept.

When all else fails in business, tell a STORY.

King Rat

Finished re-reading one of the great books of all time – King Rat by clavell.

Oh and what an ending:

“And Adam ruled, for he was the King. Until the day his will to be King deserted him. Then he died, food for a stronger. And the strongest was always the King, not by strength alone, but King by cunning and luck and strength together. Among the rats.”
