You can double your willpower, almost overnight

What if there was a switch in your brain that automatically doubled your willpower?

Your health, wealth, love, and happiness would basically skyrocket overnight.

But I learned from my friend Dr. Roy Baumeister why it’s so hard for people to develop willpower and change their self-control habits.



After he published his 2011 book Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest
Human Strength
, I put it into my top 150 best books list!

It says, “When psychologists isolate the personal qualities that predict ‘positive outcomes’ in life, they consistently find two traits: intelligence and self-control. 

“So far, researchers still haven’t learned how to permanently increase intelligence. But they have discovered, or at least rediscovered, how to improve self-control.”

Everyone focuses on intelligence. The problem is, you can't change your IQ easily.

But self-control and willpower (what scientists call "self-regulation") are like muscles -- they can get stronger over time.

One insight into increasing your willpower level: "What stress really does, is deplete willpower, which diminishes your ability to control those emotions.”

So cut stress like your life depended on it and watch your willpower effortlessly increase.

How To Strengthen Your Self-Control Muscle

When I say you can’t easily change your IQ, I’m talking about the raw intelligence that peaks at around 14 years-old.

Most high-level intellectual skills in medicine, engineering, mathematics, musical composition, or learning 7 foreign languages were apparent then.

But you can still train your mind to go way beyond where you were 5 years ago. 

And when it comes to training yourself for new habits like working out, playing an instrument, or running a business, the same mindset applies.
It all comes down to how much you practice with quality and consistency. You foster that by designing your environment for more frequent practice and training.

Cancel your Netflix subscription, and instead practice the newest skill you want to acquire. Practicing needs to become a habit you just prefer to do so that it’s almost automatic.

You can also leverage your environment  by doing easy things like having a new book by your nightstand instead of the TV remote, to more elaborate habits like prepping healthy meals and always having workout gear at the ready.

That’s how you slowly develop self-discipline and build your willpower like a muscle. You’ll overcome lots of obstacles by building a setup that gets you to practice more often.
